Why We Can’t Trust Anything TEPCO Says About Fukushima

One hundred out of 100 Pacific herring caught in Canada bleeding from their eyes, gills, fins and tails. Alaskan polar bears with oozing sores losing their fur. “Mysterious” outbreaks and mass die-offs. Dead seals and melting starfish in the Pacific. Studies coming back confirming that 100% of bluefin tuna off California’s coast contaminated with cesium-134 (half-life: two years) and cesium-137 (half-life: 30 years).

This isn’t your typical, average, everyday radioactive contamination, however. This radiation has been researched and traced back across the ocean to Fukushima and the crippled Daiichi nuclear power plant still crumbling there, spewing out 400 tons of irradiated groundwater a day, every day, since March 2011 when it was hit with a massive earthquake and subsequent tsunami.

Even though it makes every kind of logical common sense that radioactive water has been  proliferating throughout the largest ocean on the planet via currents ever since then — assimilating and ultimately effecting every single piece and natural process of the biosphere — the Tokyo Electric Power Company (TEPCO) has their own theory on why we shouldn’t worry about Fukushima radiation.

According to recent reports, TEPCO is claiming that the radiation simply doesn’t spread very far into the ocean (even though its continually being dumped in there every single second of every minute of every day):

Tokyo Electric Power Co.’s claim that radioactive water leaking into the sea from the wrecked Fukushima nuclear plant is confined to the coast doesn’t make scientific sense, according to a U.S. researcher who surveyed waters off the site last month.

Japan’s government has supported the utility’s statement that the irradiated groundwater flowing into the Pacific Ocean at a rate of some 400 tons a day remains in an area of 0.3 square kilometers (0.12 square miles) within the bay fronting the atomic station. [emphasis added]

And the Japanese government — which owns a majority share of TEPCO — supports that conclusion!

What?!

So let’s understand this. A month after the earthquake hit Fukushima, milk sampled in Hawaii by the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) had been tested and found to contain radiation at levels 2,033% higher than the federal allowable limits for drinking water, but President Obama claimed the government did not expect harmful levels of radiation to reach the U.S.

The mainstream media continues to report on new leaks as if they’re happening in a vacuum with no bioaccumulative effect in regard to all the other leaks already reported. Fresh stories are coming out all the time of sick animals and dead sea life in and around the Pacific Ocean, showing signs of what could be radiation poisoning.

Just weeks ago, it came out that storage tanks are leaking (again), and ditch water radiation readings around the plant are some 6,700 times higher at 200,000 becquerels per liter than the 30 becquerel legal limit.

A few days ago, a Fukushima worker blew the whistle that the vast array of subcontractors handling the cleanup for TECPO are not really being managed. Safety precautions and monitoring for the mostly unskilled workers there are close to nil. Wages are being skimmed off the top. Data is being fudged. Real confidence builders for the rest of the world. There are even allegations that the Yakuza, the Japanese mafia, are running most of it.

But not to worry, TEPCO says the radiation that its failed nuclear plant is continuously dumping into the ocean and contaminating the world at large with every single day is just staying right there in front of it.

(The company failed to clarify whether or not this containment was by fairy magic or flying unicorn power.)

It is okay, though, because even if the U.S. government has released maps like the one above and reports of radiation spreading from Japan throughout the entire Pacific are being confirmed with scientific animal testing off the California coast, the EPA has simply raised the safe water and soil radiation exposure level limits. Our president approved the raise last spring. The United Nations has also released a report assuring us all that radiation from Fukushima “is unlikely to be able to attribute any health effects in the future among the general public” (even as reports are being simultaneously released that significantly high numbers of Fukushima children are coming down with abnormal growths and being diagnosed with cancer).

Bear in mind, the plant sits on the site of a diverted river, on the coast of an island in the Ring of Fire, so called because of the high number of earthquakes and volcanoes that occur there. Sounds like a brilliant place to build a nuclear power plant, no?

A recent 7+ magnitude earthquake recently hit off the coast of Japan near Fukushima following a busy typhoon season, but TEPCO claims everything is just a-okay. The earthquake had no effect…no new damage, no spike in readings. The company released pictures of mudslides on the Daiichi Power Plant property (though no pictures of the plant itself).

To think that just the amount of radioactive cesium-137 being dumped into our environment alone has been estimated at the equivalent of 168 Hiroshima bombs (not to mention the how many bombs all that tritium, strontium, iodine and plutonium are worth) — to believe that something of this magnitude can happen and it will hold relatively negligible consequences on the biosphere, well…

Just because a lie is repeated over and over doesn’t make it true. Neither does closing one’s eyes and ignoring reality.

Earlier this year, yachtsman Ivan Macfadyen sailed from Melbourne, Australia to Osaka, Japan, then on to San Francisco. He recounted his eerily quiet trip in the Newcastle Herald. As someone who had traveled the same route a decade earlier, Macfadyen’s came back with his assessment — “The ocean is broken”:

“After we left Japan, it felt as if the ocean itself was dead,” Macfadyen said.

“We hardly saw any living things. We saw one whale, sort of rolling helplessly on the surface with what looked like a big tumour on its head. It was pretty sickening.

“I’ve done a lot of miles on the ocean in my life and I’m used to seeing turtles, dolphins, sharks and big flurries of feeding birds. But this time, for 3000 nautical miles there was nothing alive to be seen.”

But it wasn’t just a lack of life that haunted Macfadyen’s journey. It was the omnipresent tsunami debris still swirling around the ocean with nowhere else to go like a giant bowl of garbage soup.

Ivan’s brother, Glenn, who boarded at Hawaii for the run into the United States, marvelled at the “thousands on thousands” of yellow plastic buoys. The huge tangles of synthetic rope, fishing lines and nets. Pieces of polystyrene foam by the million. And slicks of oil and petrol, everywhere.

Countless hundreds of wooden power poles are out there, snapped off by the killer wave and still trailing their wires in the middle of the sea.

“Below decks you were constantly hearing things hitting against the hull, and you were constantly afraid of hitting something really big. As it was, the hull was scratched and dented all over the place from bits and pieces we never saw.”

Plastic was ubiquitous. Bottles, bags and every kind of throwaway domestic item you can imagine, from broken chairs to dustpans, toys and utensils.

But it gets even worse.

And something else. The boat’s vivid yellow paint job, never faded by sun or sea in years gone past, reacted with something in the water off Japan, losing its sheen in a strange and unprecedented way.

Macfadyen could come to only one conclusion.

BACK in Newcastle, Ivan Macfadyen is still coming to terms with the shock and horror of the voyage.

“The ocean is broken,” he said, shaking his head in stunned disbelief.

There’s really only one question left. Even if the people in charge had a reasonable grasp of the enormity of the situation at Fukushima, what would possibly motivate them to give the rest of us an honest assessment of what we’re actually up against here?

CNN: "NSA Scandal Spiraling Out Of Control!"

A translated and shared letter from a Tepco worker to the Japanese government....

I hammered out the translation of the e-mail from a Fukushima Daiichi's worker sent to Mr. Kazuhiro Matsumoto, and shared by my friend, Waka Imamichi.

Quote:
Thanks for your good job. I heard that you posted what I had told you the other day on your FB.

Well, since it is my day off, I am writing you our current situation.

Honestly, our technology available now is not enough (to remove the spent fuel rods). We have a severe manpower shortage and the radiation level is way too high to go near the site.

To make the matters worse, recently we lost more workers due to TEPCO’s weird atmosphere.

The number of workers is less than a half of what we used to have in the summer.

As for tanks, maybe this has not reported yet, there are leaking spots here and there. Two to three workers are assigned to check more than 400 tanks and pipes. This kind of work load is too much to finish in a day.

The workers are told to do this every day. TEPCO takes measure for whatever the problems reported by the media but nothing has been done for other issues (that are not covered by the media).

When I have a Geiger counter, my 10 sievert meter goes off the scale easily here and there.

This happens when I am 50 centimeters away. So if I get any closer, I will be dead.

We attached a censor at the tip of a stick (because of this situation).

Recently I noticed that something is going on in the number 4 reactor’s building. But I heard that whatever they are doing there is not going well.

There seem to be numerous rubbles besides spent fuel rods, which is hindering their job. They are removing the rubbles as they move the rods, which is a difficult task. They seem to be doing this as they use a camera, not as they looking down from the top. On top of that, although the workers are not complete amateur but not used to do this type of job, there is no one to show them the know-how because experienced ones are all gone.

We workers are not informed on anything concrete officially. Exchanging our experiences among us makes us so scared.

Are they gonna let us evacuate? I have no idea. We have no perspectives in the future though. Before I got this job, I saw a progress schedule chart on TV. Now I can say that it was a bxxx sxxx.

Even now rubbles are scattered around. Sometimes we spay water, sometimes times suck it up, which does not look like making any progress or based on any concrete (strategic work) process.

Surely (outer) structures are there. But they are merely preventing the reactor buildings from further crumbling down. Nothing has been done for the area that melted through.

Lately I wonder why the media does not cover the radiation level of the contaminated water. It has been exacerbated with higher level than before.

FYI, the level of contamination fluctuates every day. It could be much higher than what the media reports. So do not trust their numbers as they are.

I can tell you more. Here, people are changing so frequently that if you work about three months, you are already considered as a veteran. Don’t you think it’s weird? I guess this is the proof of not accomplishing much. I have done various jobs and, from my experience, I can say that this situation is not good. No one can go near (to the site), can do nothing, or TEPCO does not give us any instruction.

They just contracts out the jobs and don’t care. I can see that clearly from here. Heck with “Fukushima’s recovery,” it will take at least 50 years more if they continue in this way.

For example, there must be something that generates extremely high heat as much as steam comes up when it rains. It goes up in the air. I have no idea what our radiation level could be here but all I can do is to look at the steam thinking that it would eventually be blown all over by north and south winds. This is our situation.

If someone asks us if there was anything different from before, I can say that nothing has changed. I will report you again. All I can say now is that the radiation level here is extremely high. I often see the Geiger counter goes off the scale. This makes me so scared.

Talk to you again.

A Deeper Dive Into Yahoo and Facebook's Transparency Reports

Ever since Google issued its first transparency report in early 2010, EFF has called on other companies to follow suit and disclose statistics about the number of government requests for user data, whether the request they receive is an official demand (such as a warrant) or an unofficial request.  After all, users make decisions every day about which companies they trust with their data, therefore companies owe it to their customers to be transparent about when they hand data over to governments and law enforcement.

Since 2010, other companies have risen to the challenge, including Microsoft, Internet service provider Sonic.Net, cloud storage providers SpiderOak and DropBox, as well as social media companies such as LinkedIn and Twitter.

Now, two more companies have joined the movement: In the past couple of months, both Yahoo and Facebook issued their first transparency reports, covering the period of January-June 2013.

While we wish they had not taken this long, the two companies deserve kudos for taking this important step. Companies are under no legal obligation to inform their customers aggregate data about government requests for their data—this is a voluntary step. Both companies are members of the Global Network Initiative, however, which counts transparency among its core principles.

User trust

But in light of this summer’s revelations about the NSA’s PRISM—the program under which the NSA gains the ability to access to the private communications of users of many of the most popular Internet services, including those owned by Google, Microsoft, Facebook, and Yahoo—Internet giants are rushing to do what they can to restore user trust.

In September, Google, Facebook, and Yahoo all filed requests to the U.S. Foreign Intelligence Surveillance Court (FISC), asking for permission to publish the specific number of National Security Letters (NSL) that the companies received in the past year as well as the total number of user accounts affected by those requests. Of all the dangerous government surveillance powers that were expanded by the USA PATRIOT Act, the NSL power provided by five statutory provisions is one of the most frightening and invasive. These letters—the type served on communications service providers such as phone companies and ISPs and are authorized by 18 U.S.C. 2709—allow the FBI to secretly demand data about ordinary American citizens' private communications and Internet activity without any prior judicial review. To make matters worse, recipients of NSLs are subject to gag orders that forbid them from ever revealing the letters' existence to anyone. A federal judge found NSLs unconstitutional in March, but the order is on hold pending the government's appeal.

Some companies have published aggregate numbers, ranging from 0-999 or 1000-1999 that give us a broad and blurry view of just how widespread the use of NSLs has been, but more detailed numbers would much more helpful to the public understanding of the surveillence, without compromising security.

So now that Facebook and Yahoo have issued transparency reports, what do they tell us?

Facebook’s Global Government Requests Report covers January-June 2013 and reveals that 71 countries requested data on a total of 37,954 to 38,954 users. Unsurprisingly, the US demanded the largest amount of user data, making somewhere between 11,000 to 12,000 requests for 20,000 to 21,000 users.

India came in a close second, with 3,245 requests for 4,144 accounts, and the United Kingdom ranked third with 1,975 requests for 2,337 users. Facebook also revealed the number of times the requests produced "some data." Facebook handed over data to the U.S. 79% of the time, but only 50% and 68% of the time for India and the United Kingdom, respectively.

The vast majority of requests made to Facebook by less democratic countries (including Cote d’Ivoire, Nepal, and Qatar) were refused, however two nations stood out in the report: Pakistan and Turkey.  In the case of Pakistan, 35 requests were made for 47 users, 77% of which Facebook complied with.  In the case of Turkey, 96 requests for 170 users were made, and complied with 47% of the time.

What makes this unique is that no other major company has reported compliance with requests from Pakistan.  The South Asian country is nominally a democracy, but censors the Internet heavily and has made a relatively transparent effort of seeking Western companies to enable greater censorship and surveillance, a role that Canadian company Netsweeper has been all too eager to fill.  It is notable that Facebook has no offices in Pakistan (an office in-country could allow Pakistan to directly seek information from a local employee), nor has Pakistan signed a mutual legal assistance treaty (MLAT) with the US, putting Facebook under no legal obligation to comply with requests from the government.

With no offices in Turkey, either, it’s surprising to see such a high rate of compliance.  Complaints of Facebook censoring certain content in Turkey abound, and as a recent blog post by a Kurdish activist demonstrates, some of that censorship seems quite arbitrary.

At the same time, if Facebook doesn’t comply, it undoubtedly risks being blocked in these countries, just as YouTube was for several years, and a tool used by opposition figures and activists might become unavailable.  On balance, we think most countries would rightly be hesitant to remove popular Internet tool, as it may create more unrest than the information sought to be quashed.

While Facebook has been transparent about its law enforcement guidelines, information regarding its processes when it comes to international requests is vague - the data use policy allows disclosure when "consistent with internationally recognized standards," which are not defined. Facebook could enhance its transparency by clarifying its standards for complying with requests; even if its standards are perfect in everyway, users are legitimately concerned when they do not know what standards might apply.

Like Facebook, Yahoo also reported that the United States led the number of requests, with 12,444 data requests that included 40,322 Yahoo accounts. Yahoo handed content-related data, including communications in Yahoo Mail or Messenger, photos on Flickr or Yahoo Address Book entries, over to American agencies in 4,604 cases. The company gave the government non-content related information, which includes a person’s name, location or Internet Protocol address, in 6,798 cases.

Yahoo received fewer requests from the United Kingdom (1,709) and India (1,490) than did Facebook, with similar compliance rates.  Once nice feature of Yahoo’s report is that it breaks down the type of data disclosure (non-content vs. content) in a pie chart for each country.  In the UK, for example, 44% of requests were responded to with disclosures of non-content data, while in 20% of cases, content was disclosed to law enforcement.

Surprisingly, Yahoo received far more requests from Hong Kong than any other company, and complied with 100% of them (content was only disclosed in 1% of those cases).  The South China Morning Post quoted lawmaker Charles Mok as saying that the number was high, and called on Yahoo to disclose which government agencies requested the data.

Ten Steps You Can Take Right Now Against Internet Surveillance

One of the trends we've seen is how, as the word of the NSA's spying has spread, more and more ordinary people want to know how (or if) they can defend themselves from surveillance online. But where to start?

The bad news is: if you're being personally targeted by a powerful intelligence agency like the NSA, it's very, very difficult to defend yourself. The good news, if you can call it that, is that much of what the NSA is doing is mass surveillance on everybody. With a few small steps, you can make that kind of surveillance a lot more difficult and expensive, both against you individually, and more generally against everyone.

Here's ten steps you can take to make your own devices secure. This isn't a complete list, and it won't make you completely safe from spying. But every step you take will make you a little bit safer than average. And it will make your attackers, whether they're the NSA or a local criminal, have to work that much harder.

  1. Use end-to-end encryption. We know the NSA has been working to undermine encryption, but experts like Bruce Schneier who have seen the NSA documents feel that encryption is still "your friend". And your best friends remain open source systems that don't share your secret key with others, are open to examination by security experts, and encrypt data all the way from one end of a conversation to the other: from your device to the person you're chatting with. The easiest tool that achieves this end-to-end encryption is off-the-record (OTR) messaging, which gives instant messaging clients end-to-end encryption capabilities (and you can use it over existing services, such as Google Hangout and Facebook chat). Install it on your own computers, and get your friends to install it too. When you've done that, look into PGP–it's tricky to use, but used well it'll stop your email from being an open book to snoopers.
  2. Encrypt as much communications as you can. Even if you can't do end-to-end, you can still encrypt a lot of your Internet traffic. If you use EFF's HTTPS Everywhere browser addon for Chrome or Firefox, you can maximise the amount of web data you protect by forcing websites to encrypt webpages whenever possible. Use a virtual private network (VPN) when you're on a network you don't trust, like a cybercafe.
  3. Encrypt your hard drive. The latest version of Windows, Macs, iOS and Android all have ways to encrypt your local storage. Turn it on. Without it, anyone with a few minutes physical access to your computer, tablet or smartphone can copy its contents, even if they don't have your password.
  4. Strong passwords, kept safe. Passwords these days have to be ridiculously long to be safe against crackers. That includes the password to email accounts, and passwords to unlock devices, and passwords to web services. If it's bad to re-use passwords, and bad to use short passwords, how can you remember them all? Use a password manager. Even write down your passwords and keeping them in your wallet is safer than re-using the same short memorable password -- at least you'll know when your wallet is stolen. You can create a memorable strong master password using a random word system like that described at diceware.com.
  5. Use Tor. "Tor Stinks", this slide leaked from GCHQ says. That shows much the intelligence services are worried about it. Tor is an the open source program that protects your anonymity online by shuffling your data through a global network of volunteer servers. If you install and use Tor, you can hide your origins from corporate and mass surveillance. You'll also be showing that Tor is used by everyone, not just the "terrorists" that GCHQ claims.
  6. Turn on two-factor (or two-step) authentication. Google and Gmail has it; Twitter has it; Dropbox has it. Two factor authentication, where you type a password and a regularly changed confirmation number, helps protect you from attacks on web and cloud services. When available, turn it on for the services you use. If it's not available, tell the company you want it.
  7. Don't click on attachments. The easiest ways to get intrusive malware onto your computer is through your email, or through compromised websites. Browsers are getting better at protecting you from the worst of the web, but files sent by email or downloaded from the Net can still take complete control of your computer. Get your friends to send you information in text; when they send you a file, double-check it's really from them.
  8. Keep software updated, and use anti-virus software. The NSA may be attempting to compromise Internet companies (and we're still waiting to see whether anti-virus companies deliberately ignore government malware), but on the balance, it's still better to have the companies trying to fix your software than have attackers be able to exploit old bugs.
  9. Keep extra secret information extra secure. Think about the data you have, and take extra steps to encrypt and conceal your most private data. You can use TrueCrypt to separately encrypt a USB flash drive. You might even want to keep your most private data on a cheap netbook, kept offline and only used for the purposes of reading or editing documents.
  10. Be an ally. If you understand and care enough to have read this far, we need your help. To really challenge the surveillance state, you need to teach others what you've learned, and explain to them why it's important. Install OTR, Tor and other software for worried colleagues, and teach your friends how to use them. Explain to them the impact of the NSA revelations. Ask them to sign up to Stop Watching Us and other campaigns against bulk spying. Run a Tor node, or hold a cryptoparty. They need to stop watching us; and we need to start making it much harder for them to get away with it.

NSA site down due to alleged DDoS attack

The website for the United States National Security Agency suddenly went offline Friday.

NSA.gov has been unavailable globally as of late Friday afternoon, and Twitter accounts belonging to people loosely affiliated with the Anonymous hacktivism movement have suggested they are responsible.

Twitter users @AnonymousOwn3r and @TruthIzSexy both were quick to comment on the matter, and implied that a distributed denial-of-service attack, or DDoS, may have been waged as an act of protest against the NSA

Allegations that those users participated in the DDoS — a method of over-loading a website with too much traffic — are currently unverified, and @AnonymousOwn3r has previously taken credit for downing websites in a similar fashion, although those claims have been largely contested.

The crippling of NSA.gov comes amid a series of damning national security documents that have been disclosed without authorization by former intelligence contractor Edward Snowden. The revelations in the leaked documents have impassioned people around the globe outraged by evidence of widespread surveillance operated by the NSA, and a massive “Stop Watching Us” rally is scheduled for Saturday in Washington, DC.

DDoS attacks are illegal in the United States under the Computer Fraud and Abuse Act, or CFAA, and two cases are currently underway in California and Virginia in which federal judges are weighing in on instances in which members of Anonymous allegedly used the technique to take down an array of sites during anti-copyright campaigns waged by the group in 2010 and 2011. In those cases, so-called hacktivsits are reported to have conspired together to send immense loads of traffic to targeted websites, rendering them inaccessible due to the overload.

Curing cancer the natural way

If you are diagnosed with cancer, there is only one course of action available: chemotherapy and/or radiation. What big pharma doesn't want you to know is there are things you can do to treat cancer that are possibly more effective and much easier on the human body. By testing your own pH level and working to alkalize the body and increasing oxygen intake, cancer cells can be killed.

Increasing oxygen

Cancer cells derive their energy without the use of oxygen and die when large amounts of oxygen are infused into their environment. Taking food-grade hydrogen peroxide or receiving it intravenously has been shown to be an effective treatment. EWOT (Exercise With Oxygen Therapy) is a method of receiving high levels of oxygen, which is simply performing aerobic exercise on a stationary bike or treadmill while breathing from an oxygen tank. Supplementing with DMG (Dimethylglycine) -- an agent that increases the use of oxygen in the tissues -- and even deep breathing outdoors can be beneficial. And of course, do not smoke.

Balancing the pH level

Another treatment is balancing the body's pH level. Cancerous tissues actually flourish in an acidic environment whereas an alkaline environment will destroy the cancer cells. Increasing oxygen intake actually helps neutralize acid in the body as well as making sure that 80 percent of your diet is alkaline-forming foods. This means consuming mostly vegetables, fruits, nuts, seeds, grains and legumes.

A pH level slightly above 7.4 means the cancer cells will become dormant while at 8.5 the cancer cells die, leaving the healthy ones behind. There is evidence; however, that cancer grows more quickly as the body becomes more alkaline before reaching the slightly higher than 7.4 point where cancer becomes dormant. Therefore, it is crucial that one gets their pH level to 7.4 as quickly as possible.

Four main causes of disease

There are thought to be four main causes of disease: 1) Too many toxins in the body 2) Nutritional deficiencies 3) Electromagnetic chaos and 4) Stress

By correcting these causes you can bring the body to a state where disease cannot grow and thrive. You can detoxify through a colon or liver cleanse or a fast and drinking plenty of water to wash out the toxins. Eating mostly a vegetarian, organic diet, eliminating preservatives and chemicals (like aspartame, MSG and fluoride) and taking alkaline minerals such as calcium, magnesium, potassium, cesium or rubidium will ensure the body receives all the necessary nutrients for repair and healing. Sleeping on a magnetic mattress pad will help to alkalize the body. And decrease stress by any means possible because stress is not only hard on the human body but it has many other effects which are still unknown.

A diagnosis of cancer is an extremely stressful event, but remember there are natural cures that may be far more potent than what big pharma has to offer.

Mexico halts all GMO corn from being planted

Just days before a recent March Against Monsanto protest that took place globally on October 12, Mexico, the geographical birthplace of modern-day corn, instituted a regulatory ban on all plantings of genetically modified (GM) varieties of this staple food crop. A victory for food freedom and agricultural integrity, the announcement was made at a press conference in Mexico City on October 10, where officials notified the public and the press that all GM corn plantings, including pilot commercial plantings, were to be immediately suspended.

Though not necessarily permanent, the injunction came after years of protests against transgenic crops, particularly those that threaten the persistence of staple crops like corn. For Mexico, corn, also known as maize, is a primary food crop for which there are hundreds, if not thousands, of heirloom varieties currently being grown. If GM corn varieties are allowed to be cultivated alongside them on any considerable scale, Mexico's entire agricultural heritage could become extinct.

"The decision came after years of lobbying by activists who noted that Mexico -- the birthplace of modern-day maize and its cultivation -- knows a little bit about how to create various disease-resistant strains of corn, given Mexicans in one form of tribe or another, have been doing it for millennia," writes Gustavo Arellano for the OC Weekly.

Despite a moratorium on GM corn cultivation in Mexico that dates back to 1998, many native maize varieties have still tested positive for low levels of modified genes, which proves that GMOs cannot be contained and have a tendency to contaminate other crops. Because of this, a coalition of 53 groups and individuals, which includes scientists and human rights groups, filed a lawsuit last year to suspend all field trials of GM corn and other experiments that could be causing this contamination.

Agreeing with their argument, a Mexican judge later ruled that all field trials of GM corn in Mexico must end, citing specific and imminent environmental risks. A press release recently issued by the non-governmental organization La Coperacha affirms this decision, noting that Mexican law requires justices to protect the interests of the people rather than the interests of big business, which in this case means multinational chemical companies like Monsanto.

Mexico will still import GMO corn, despite ban

The ruling is timely, as many areas of Mexico have been pressured in recent years to accept not only field trials of GM corn but also commercial plantings, despite their risks to native corn varieties. Unfortunately though, the ruling does not go far enough, say some, as Mexico will continue to import GM corn from other countries like the U.S. -- roughly one-third of the corn Mexico consumes is imported.

"The ruling has understandably caused joy across Mexico and the anti-GMO world, but it's also not as far-reaching as you would think," adds Arellano. "The judge in question didn't ban the import of GMO corn into Mexico -- and in this globalized society, Mexicans are just as likely to eat corn from Minnesota as they are elote from Puebla."

Even so, the decision has earned considerable attention the world over, as Mexico is now the only country in North America to ban the cultivation of a GM crop. Neither the U.S. nor Canada has taken any action thus far against the growing onslaught of GMO pollution within their borders, despite the fact that most other developed countries in the world have either banned GMOs or require them to at least be properly labeled.

CryptoSeal VPN service opts to close down rather than grant NSA access

CryptoSeal, a virtual private network that has guaranteed its customers would be insulated from internet surveillance, announced that it will close down rather than risk exposure to government monitoring and the costly fees that accompany compliance.

CryptoSeal issued a Monday statement indicating that the company will still offer its VPN for businesses, but its customer-only service will no longer be available. For a small fee, an individual user can establish their own encrypted internet connection through a VPN service and reroute all of their traffic through that point.

With immediate effect as of this notice, CryptoSeal Privacy, our consumer VPN service, is terminated. All cryptographic keys used in the operation of the service has been zerofilled [purged], and while no logs were produced (by design) during operation of the service, all records created incidental to the operation of the service have been deleted to the best of our ability,” the statement read.

Essentially, the service was created and operated under a certain understanding of current US law, and that understanding may not currently be valid. As we are a US company and comply fully with US law, but wish to protect the privacy of our users, it is impossible for us to continue offering the CryptoSeal Privacy consumer VPN product.”

Monday’s announcement is hardly unique. A number of privacy companies have made headlines in the months following the revelation that the US National Security Agency has secretly forced internet and telecommunication companies to install so-called backdoors that will allow the government to database emails and other messages.

CryptoSeal’s business VPN is not designed to block government access and, if the company is served with a pen register order, the NSA could technically access protected messages, SSL keys, and infiltrate other privacy safeguards. A pen register is capable of automatically recording a vast number of telephone numbers and internet access information.

CryptoSeal Connect is not designed as a BitTorrent or other file-sharing VPN and is not designed to give you anonymity against the legal system,” the company told Ars Technica. “We fully comply with all warrants and subpoenas and are located in the United States. We suggest using systems such as the Tor Project for anonymity requirements.”

The statement continued, outlining “a Government theory that if a pen register order is made on a provider, and the provider’s systems do not readily facilitate full monitoring of pen register information and delivery to the Government in realtime, the Government can compel production of cryptographic keys via a warrant to support a government-provided pen trap device.”

The same issue forced the hand of Ladar Levison, founder and owner of Lavabit, the email service used by NSA whistleblower Edward Snowden. Levison opted to shut Lavabit down instead of complying with a government order compelling him to turn over the service’s SSL key, which would have granted the NSA access to all of Lavabit’s customers.

Although Levinson had no choice but to turn over the SSL key, he did terminate the email service, giving the NSA nothing to comb through.

Lavabit pointed out in a recent court filing that officials also forbade the service from informing anyone – including its customers and partners – that it has compromised their security. According to the brief, government officials “insisted that all of those parties be affirmatively misled into believing that the system remained secure against exactly the kind of secret monitoring that the government was proposing.”

While the federal government charged Levison $5,000 each day he denied them, CryptoSeal founder and CEO Ryan Lackey reportedly posted a comment on Hacker News detailing the costs he was facing.

The financial issue was the potentially huge liability due to a legal action or battle, not the [small] costs of operating the service,” a user thought to be Lackey wrote.

If we were the legally best VPN option, I would have probably pushed to keep it going anyway and just shut down when/if that happened, but as it is, non-US providers run by non-US people [there are several good ones] are an objectively better option, so in good conscience there’s no reason to continue running a US privacy VPN service without technical controls to prevent being compelled to screw over a user.”

This May Be Well Worth Your Time: GROUNDED

The surface of the Earth holds subtle health-boosting energy. All we have to do is touch it and become truly alive. In the documentary film Grounded, you can see this amazing phenomenon transform the life of people who had been struggling with health issues like chronic pain, and one man who had been wheelchair-bound for decades is able to walk again.

Even plants are drastically impacted when they are taken away from the Earth’s natural energy. Yet, the act of grounding, or Earthing, as it’s sometimes called, isn’t really an unusual phenomenon at all. It’s actually a natural act that virtually every living creature does instinctively.

Your Body Needs its Connection to the Earth: In the film, you’ll see an orphaned baby moose that instinctively lies on an Earthing pad to connect him to the Earth while he’s being temporarily housed in a trailer. The moose goes to the pad whether it’s concealed or not.

This simple act, which can also be achieved by walking barefoot on the Earth, transfers free electrons from the Earth’s surface into your body that spread throughout your tissues.

Who Owns the Organic Brands?

Money is being spent BIG time in offensives against GMO labeling bills introduced in various states. One humongous battle—over $7.2 Million worth and counting—that currently is going on, is in the State of Washington regarding Initiative 522. Mike Adams of NaturalNews discusses that here.

Regarding the defeat of GMO Labeling Proposition 37 in California in November of 2012, Common Dreams says this:
Opposition of Proposition 37 was spearheaded by large agribusiness and chemical companies—such as Monsanto and Dow—and big food manufacturers—including PepsiCo, Nestle, and Conagra—who dumped more than $45 million into the fight. Monsanto, a leading maker of genetically engineered seeds, contributed $8.1 million alone against the measure which would have required labeling on genetically modified food. (Source) [CJF Emphasis added]
Recently, the apparent illegal activities of the Grocery Manufacturers Association in Washington State were uncovered, i.e., “the Grocery Manufacturers Association got caught red-handed violating Washington state fair election laws by running a money laundering slush fund designed to conceal the identities of food companies giving money to block  I-522,” as Mike Adams points out.

Washington State’s Attorney General got involved, and suddenly GMA saw the light and divulged who was ponying up bucks to defeat I-522. The food companies involved are listed later on in this article.

However, maybe it would be helpful if consumers everywhere, not just in Washington State, knew how many of the organic labels actually are owned by Big Agra firms. Keeping that ownership in mind, one ought to question what the method to their madness is. Realistically, they have the best of both worlds: profits from organic food labels and standard labels, since many of them own both, if not most of the organics.

Questions about allowing the use of GMOs in organic food products have been buzzing around the industry for a long time, and the USDA addresses that in a series of articles. In its May 17, 2013 article “Organic 101: Can GMOs Be Used in Organic Products?” the USDA explains what’s going on.

The dichotomous part about GMO labeling is this: If USA food manufacturers want to ship product to other countries, they must label GMOs. That brings to mind the fact that U.S. brands do not place certain chemicals and food colors in foods shipped to the U.K. See this from Prevention’s blog:
According to CBS Money Watch, American companies that are part of our Grocery Manufacturers Association, household names like Kraft, Pepsi and Kellogg, “have switched to natural colorings in their products in the U.K., where warning labels are required, but they’re not doing that here for the most part. That’s because no one’s making them do it, and switching would cost a lot of money.”
And interestingly, Kraft, Coca Cola and Wal-Mart have already removed these artificial food colors and dyes from the products that they distribute in other countries. They’ve reformulated their product lines in other countries and no longer include these food dyes, and they did it in response to consumer demand and an extraordinary study called the Southampton Study. [1]
If GMA food manufacturers can do it for food exports, why not for food stuffs sold here in the USA? The reason probably is because of their being ‘in cahoots’ with the chemical industry. Chemical companies also pony up dollars to fight GMO labeling bills. It would seem that it’s about maintaining the chemicalization of the U.S. food supply.

This website talks about GMO food labeling laws in various countries. http://naturalrevolution.org/list-of-countries-that-ban-gmo-crops-and-require-ge-food-labels/

The World Bank, IMF, and Intelligence Agencies Serve Big Corporations

6,000 lbs of food on 1/10th acre - In the Middle of the City

Device Can Disable Car and Boat Engines 50 Meters Away in Under 3 Seconds

A new radio-beam device has been unveiled that can disable car and boat engines from up to 50 meters away in under three seconds and can be operated from a mobile platform or at a fixed location.

Devices capable of remotely disabling electronics are nothing new, given that devices capable of remotely disabling phones, intercepting communications and tracking targets have been around for years.

However, this is one of the first publicly unveiled devices capable of remotely disabling a wide range of vehicle engines.

The device, dubbed RF Safe-Stop, produced by e2v, weighs around 771 pounds and is reportedly aimed at stopping vehicles suspected of being used as car bombs, according to The Engineer.

RF Safe-Stop was first shown at DSEI 2013, dubbed “the world leading defense and security event” in September.

The device typically causes engines to shut down in less than one second, without destroying the target engine.

The company maintains that their “extensive testing and signal conditioning” ensure that the RF field emitted by the device is within international guidelines and is human-safe.

So far, the unit has been tested on a Nissan Nevara and Toyota Land Cruiser, but Andy Wood, product manager for e2v, told The Engineer that it can also be used on a variety of other platforms.

It can be fitted into fixed-base installations, rib-type boats and there are plans to integrate it into a helicopter, The Engineer reports.

RF Safe-Stop works by generate powerful radio frequency pulses which “confuse” a vehicle’s electronics and make them temporarily inoperable, according to Wood.

“Basically the ECU (engine control unit) or immobilizer…once affected, will try and reset,” Wood said. “As long as you keep it ‘confused’ the engine won’t restart.”

The system is designed to be able to be used many times without running out of power and does not require any special training to use.

The company is “aiming for a system that that allows the user to do nothing more complicated than push a red button when the target is in range,” according to The Engineer.

So far, 17 countries and five government bodies in the United Kingdom have already expressed interest in the system.

Wood said that orders for the system will probably be taken in the coming weeks and that their system can be tailored for the requirements of the particular agency that is placing the order.

One must wonder how safe this would really be, especially on a car like a Prius that contains sensitive electronics systems that control everything the car does.

Chemotherapy actually increases cancer growth, cancer cells becoming resistant to treatment: Study

The cancer treatment scam that is chemotherapy has once again been shown in the scientific literature to be a major cause of, rather than a cure for, cancer. According to a new study recently published in the peer-reviewed journal Nature, chemotherapy not only promotes the growth and spread of cancer cells by damaging the healthy tissue that surrounds tumors, but it also causes cancer cells to develop full-on resistance to the popular treatment, morphing them into "super" cancer cells.

Researchers from the Fred Hutchison Cancer Research Center in Seattle, Washington, learned this after observing the effects of chemotherapy on healthy cell tissue. What they found is something that we here at NaturalNews have been saying for years, but that the medical system as a whole is only just now waking up to -- chemotherapy, which is a recognized poison, damages the DNA of healthy, non-cancerous cells, causing them to produce molecules that in turn produce more cancer cells.

It does not take a rocket scientist to make this deduction, of course, as simple common sense dictates that blasting healthy cells along with unhealthy cells is going to cause damage to all of the cells. But this is apparently big news up in the Northwest, where scientists are apparently baffled as to how this can be. And we are not talking about minor damage here -- according to the figures, major damage to healthy cells occurs as a result of routine chemotherapy treatments.

"[T]he researchers found that chemotherapy can cause fibroblasts (cell DNA) to increase production of a molecule called WNT16B by 30-fold in tissues surrounding a tumor," explains the group Cancer Research U.K. in a recent report on the study. "This then helps cancer cells to grow, invade neighboring cells and resist chemotherapy," it adds.

'Super' cancer cells caused by chemotherapy more deadly than ever

As if this is not bad enough, the same team found that another major side effect of chemotherapy is cancer cells grow more virulent than they were before the treatment. Like "superbugs" and "superweeds," which we now know developed resistance in response to conventional drug therapies and chemical sprayings, respectively, these "super" cancer cells no longer respond even to the most aggressive forms of chemotherapy, which means cancer itself is becoming more deadly.

"These results delineate a mechanism by which genotoxic therapies given in a cyclical manner can enhance subsequent treatment resistance through cell nonautonomous effects that are contributed by the tumor microenvironment," explains the study abstract.

You can read the fully study abstract here:
http://www.nature.com/nm/journal/v18/n9/full/nm.2890.html

Not surprisingly, at least one doctor heavily vested in the cancer industry has already come out to call not for an end to chemotherapy but rather for the development of new treatments that might alter the body's natural resistance mechanisms to better accommodate the toxic effects of chemotherapy. This is how the conventional medical system operates, of course -- simply add new drugs into the mix to cover up the side effects of other drugs, and lather, rinse, repeat.

"Most cancer patients in this country die of chemotherapy," explains Dr. Allen Levin, M.D., from the University of California, San Francisco, in his book, The Healing of Cancer. "Chemotherapy does not eliminate breast, colon, or lung cancers. This fact has been documented for over a decade, yet doctors still use chemotherapy for these tumors."

If you or a loved one suffers from cancer, there are alternatives to chemotherapy and radiation. The Gerson Therapy; Dr. Stanislaw Burzynski's antineoplastons; cannabis oil containing high levels of healing cannabinoids; and freshly-juiced marijuana leaves are all viable cancer treatment protocols that have healed many people.

CNN Exposed – Emmy Winning Former CNN Journalist Blows The Whistle: CNN is paid by foreign and domestic Government agencies for specific content...

amberlyn_460.jpg

(THE CONSERVATIVE TREEHOUSE) -- [...] CNN is paid by the US government for reporting on some events, and not reporting on others.  The Obama Administration pays CNN for content control.

Let that sink in.

Additionally CNN and CNN International are also paid by foreign governments to avoid stories that are damaging, and construct narratives that show them in a better, albeit false, light.

Amber Lyon is a three-time Emmy winning investigative journalist and photographer. She accuses CNN of being “fake news.”

Back in March 2011, CNN sent a four person team to Bahrain to cover the Arab Spring. Once there, the crew was the subject of extreme intimidation amongst other things, but they were able to record some fantastic footage. As Glenn Greenwald of the UK’s Guardian writes in his blockbuster article from September 4th 2012:

“In the segment, Lyon interviewed activists as they explicitly described their torture at the hands of government forces, while family members recounted their relatives’ abrupt disappearances. She spoke with government officials justifying the imprisonment of activists. And the segment featured harrowing video footage of regime forces shooting unarmed demonstrators, along with the mass arrests of peaceful protesters. In sum, the early 2011 CNN segment on Bahrain presented one of the starkest reports to date of the brutal repression embraced by the US-backed regime.
Despite these accolades, and despite the dangers their own journalists and their sources endured to produce it, CNN International (CNNi) never broadcast the documentary. Even in the face of numerous inquiries and complaints from their own employees inside CNN, it continued to refuse to broadcast the program or even provide any explanation for the decision. To date, this documentary has never aired on CNNi.
Having just returned from Bahrain, Lyon says she “saw first-hand that these regime claims were lies, and I couldn’t believe CNN was making me put what I knew to be government lies into my reporting.”

Here is a segment of the Bahrain report that Amber Lyon and her team put together.  CNNi refused to allow it to air because the Bahrain Government had paid them not to show it.

When Amber Lyon recognized the extent of the reasoning, she challenged CNN. CNN told her to be quiet, and began to view her as a risk.   She knew, and found out, too much.

Amber is now trying to tell the story, the real story, of what is going on behind the closed doors of US Media entities. Amber has created her own website, and additionally as noted in the Guardian Article she is trying to share the truth of the deceptions.

What Amber Lyon describes is exactly the reason why CNN never aired the Nick Robertson interview with Muhammed Al Zawahiri in Egypt.

Amber recently did a web interview with Alex Jones on InfoWars. Generally the TreeHouse does not appreciate Alex Jones.  He is wound up tighter than piano wire, and unfortunately much of his truth is diminished because of the hype he places upon it.

Alex Jones is easy to disregard as a “conspiracy theorist”, not because of what he says, but because of how he says it. Everything is desperate and dangerous with him.

That said, the words and explanations of Ms. Lyon in the discussion/interview are poignant and vastly informative.   So I share the video with you so you can hear from Amber herself exactly what is being described and articulated.

It is critical to listen to what she says, not just about Bahrain but also about what the Obama administration is specifically doing.    Just try to overlook the Alex Jones-ism, and focus on what Amber Lyon is sharing. Read the entire article via The Conservative Treehouse...

Mexico Judge Bans Monsanto's GMO Corn

An October 10 press release with Mexico City byline announces the banning of genetically-engineered corn in Mexico. According to the group that issued the press release, La Coperacha, a federal judge has ordered Mexico’s SAGARPA (Secretaría de Agricultura, Ganadería, Desarrollo Rural, Pesca, y Alimentación), which is Mexico’s Secretary of Agriculture, and SEMARNAT (Secretaría de Medio Ambiente y Recursos Naturales), which is equivalent of the EPA, to immediately “suspend all activities involving the planting of transgenic corn in the country and end the granting of permission for experimental and pilot commercial plantings”.

The unprecedented ban was granted by the Twelfth Federal District Court for Civil Matters of Mexico City. Judge Jaime Eduardo Verdugo J. wrote the opinion and cited “the risk of imminent harm to the environment” as the basis for the decision. The judge’s ruling also ruled that multinationals like Monsanto and Pioneer are banned from the release of transgenic maize in the Mexican countryside” as long as collective action lawsuits initiated by citizens, farmers, scientists, and civil society organizations are working their way through the judicial system.
The decision was explained during a press conference in Mexico City yesterday by members of the community-based organizations that sued federal authorities and companies introducing transgenic maize into Mexico. The group, Acción Colectiva, is led by Father Miguel Concha of the Human Rights Center Fray Francisco de Vittoria; Victor Suarez of ANEC (National Association of Rural Commercialization Entertprises); Dr. Mercedes Lopéz of Vía Organica; and Adelita San Vicente, a teacher and member of Semillas de Vida, a national organization that has been involved in broad-based social action projects to protect Mexico’s extraordinary status as a major world center of food crop biodiversity.
Some of the native maize varieties from Oaxaca, Mexico
According to the press release, Acción Colectiva [Collective Action] aims to achieve absolute federal declaration of the suspension of the introduction of transgenic maize in all its various forms – including experimental and pilot commercial plantings – in  Mexico, “which is the birthplace of corn in the world”.
This ruling marks a milestone in the long struggle of citizen demands for a GMO-free country, acknowledged Rene Sanchez Galindo, legal counsel for the plaintiffs in the lawsuit, adding that the ruling has serious enforcement provisions and includes the possibility of “criminal charges for the authorities responsible for allowing the introduction of transgenic corn in our country”.
Father Miguel Concha said the judge’s decision reflects a commitment to respect the Precautionary Principle expressed in various international treaties and statements of human rights. Concha emphasized that the government is obliged to protect the human rights of Mexicans against the economic interests of big business. The lawsuit seeks to protect the “human right to save and use the agrobiodiversity of native landraces from the threats posed by GMO maize”, said the human rights advocate.
The class action lawsuit is supported by scientific evidence from studies that have – since 2001 – documented the contamination of Mexico’s native corn varieties by transgenes from GMO corn, principally the varieties introduced by Monsanto’s Roundup ready lines and the herbicide-resistant varieties marketed by Pioneer and Bayer CropScience. The collection of the growing body of scientific research on the introgression of transgenes into Mexico’s native corn genome has been a principal goal and activity of the national campaign, Sin Maíz, No Hay Paíz [Without Corn, There Is No Country].

Louisiana Oil: From The Kingfish To Deepwater Horizon

The collapse of Deepwater Horizon

This is not just another article about Deepwater Horizon, but rather a short history lesson.  For instance, have  you, or do you…

…ever wonder where the New Deal came from and why?

…know who drew up the borders of Iran, and why?

…ever wonder why Huey P. Long is universally portrayed as a mere laughable Southern caricature, though he was a hero to the common people of Louisiana until his death?

…know which oil company is responsible for more oil spills than any other?

…ever met a real live Cajun?  (aahyee!)

…know very much at all about Louisiana?

Well, make some popcorn and sit back, here is a full length documentary.  Unlike the History lessons in school, you will not be asked to memorize any names, dates or places, nor will you be bored and watching the clock for the end of the period.

Note: The first five minutes told enough history – of which most Americans today are completely unaware – that I knew where this was going to end up.  It should be added though, that when Churchill drew a circle around the huge sea of oil that British engineers had discovered, and named it Iran, he made sure to include all the neighboring warring factions he could.  Many have been critical of him for this, saying it was a stupid thing to do, but in doing so he ensured instability in the region for the next 100 years to come.  He also referred to Iran as the British Empire’s refueling station for the next war.  This was shortly after World War I.

Recently I had a conversation with one of my employees who is attending College here in WA.  We were talking about  history and Huey came up.  He told me that his American History teacher – who has a Doctorate in Spanish History – covered Huey Long one day.  Rather than teach the history of what he did and what was happening back then – which WA was ostensibly paying her to do – she editorialized history and merely explained to the class that Huey P. Long was more or less a joke and a ridiculous figure.  (But don’t get me started on the WA Education System.  That is another story for another day.  But it is coming…)

Now, for those of you who do not know, in order to force Standard Oil begin to pay for the oil they were taking from Louisiana, Governor Long sent in the LA State Guard to seize Standard Oil property.  This brought Standard Oil around enough for them to start sharing the wealth, although begrudgingly.  Later, Huey, then a Senator and armed with a million American’s signatures on his Redistribute The Wealth Petition, was obviously headed for the White House long before he made the declaration.  It was at this time that Roosevelt rolled out a watered down version of Huey’s programs with the name “The New Deal.”

They say that history repeats itself and the film begins to point this out when it mentions the plundering of the Southern States as a prelude to the more than fifty years of brutal Colonial plundering of South America.   However the parallels continue way past what the film mentions.  Long’s seizure of Standard Oil’s property, though little known by the American public was not lost on Hugo Chavez, who did pretty much the same thing to the oil companies which were plundering his country’s resources.  Another parallel can be drawn between the assassination of Long and the recent death of Hugo Chavez by cancer.  Of course, there is no hard evidence – there never is in a successful conspiracy – but it becomes exceedingly clear that working for the people against Big Oil is not good for one’s longevity.

Anyone want to go get some seafood?

Frakenfood Revolution: World Protests Monsanto & GMO

A worldwide rally against genetically modified food giant Monsanto is being held across the globe. Activists are protesting the use of potentially harmful chemicals in food production, something Monsanto says is the only way to feed the globe's growing population. Study: Non-hallucinogenic Cannabinoids are Effective Anti-Cancer Drugs

New research has shown that the non-hallucinogenic components of cannabis could act as effective anti-cancer agents.

The anti-cancer properties of tetrahydrocannabinol (THC), the primary hallucinogenic component of cannabis, has been recognised for many years, but research into similar cannabis-derived compounds, known as cannabinoids, has been limited.

The study was carried out by a team at St George’s, University of London. It has been published in the journal Anticancer Research.

The team, led by Dr Wai Liu and colleagues carried out laboratory investigations using a number of cannabinoids, either alone or in combination with each other, to measure their anti-cancer actions in relation to leukaemia.

Of six cannabinoids studied, each demonstrated anti-cancer properties as effective as those seen in THC. Importantly, they had an increased effect on cancer cells when combined with each other.

Dr Liu said: “This study is a critical step in unpicking the mysteries of cannabis as a source of medicine. The cannabinoids examined have minimal, if any, hallucinogenic side effects, and their properties as anti-cancer agents are promising.

“These agents are able to interfere with the development of cancerous cells, stopping them in their tracks and preventing them from growing. In some cases, by using specific dosage patterns, they can destroy cancer cells on their own.

“Used in combination with existing treatment, we could discover some highly effective strategies for tackling cancer. Significantly, these compounds are inexpensive to produce and making better use of their unique properties could result in much more cost effective anti-cancer drugs in future.”

This latest research is part of a growing portfolio of studies into the medicinal properties of cannabis by the research team at St George’s. The next step will be to examine in the laboratory these compounds in combination with existing anti-cancer treatments and study treatment schedules to identify strategies that will maximise their efficacy.

The study examined two forms of cannabidiol (CBD), two forms of cannabigerol (CBG) and two forms of cannabigevarin (CBGV). These represent the most common cannabinoids found in the cannabis plant apart from THC.

3 Companies Using GMOs in Baby Formula

It seems with the many reports of birth defects, organ failure, cancer, and other unsavory health conditions associated with GMO consumption, we should limit the use of GMO in baby products. After all, babies are very sensitive to the foods they consume, and we already know that pesticides found in mother’s milk can be damaging. Below you will learn of three companies which represent more than 90% of baby formula sales in the US that won’t consider removing GMOs from your baby’s food.

Health-Damaging GMOs in Baby Formula

Why would we knowingly feed our children GMOs before it has really been proven to be ‘safe’ as Monsanto, BASF, and other companies like Abbott Laboratories, Mead Johnson Nutrition, and Nestlé USA, the company who wants to own water rights, tout?

If you feed your baby one of the following three infant formulas, you are perhaps, unknowingly, feeding them GMO corn, sugar beets, and soy, since they are often used these companies’ products:

1. Similac

One of the widest used brands and often given out for ‘free’ at hospitals, this baby formula is made by Abbott Laboratories. The company is selling you a can of baby formula for over $100 that is full of GMO poisons. You could contact the company to ask why it would include GMOs, or, you can just boycott it altogether. Shareholders are supposed to vote on whether the company is able to continue to use GMO in baby formulas. Abott Laboratories is one of the top 10 pharmaceutical companies – go figure.

2. Enfamil

Another baby formula often given out as ‘free’ samples to new mothers iis made by Mead Johnson Nutrition. Their website boasts, ‘Enfamil, scientifically designed to meet the nutritional needs of newborns and infants.’ The following Mead Johnson formulas are known to have GMO toxins:

  • Enfamil with Iron
  • Enfamil with low Iron
  • Enfamil Lacto Free
  • Enfamil 22
  • Enfamil Next Step (both soy and milk varieties)
  • Enfamil Nutramigen
  • Enfamil Pro-Soybee

3. Gerber Good Start

The GMO-riddled formula made by Nestlé USA is perhaps the most questionable since the company has knowingly tried to ‘patent’ water and make it a commodity though it is all part of life itself on this planet. Do we really want to trust a company who wants privatize water with feeding our children health foods? The company went GMO free in South Africa, according to Corporate Action Network, but continues to sell American families the contaminated GMO formula we feed our babies every day.

Nestlé USA and Mead Johnson Nutrition have dismissed calls to remove genetically-modified organisms (GMO) from their infant formula products in the US – citing the approved use of GMOs by several national and global regulatory bodies.

You can boycott all these companies and start making your own home-made, natural baby formula without toxic chemicals and pesticides and nasty GMOs. The assistant director of the FDA, Nick Duy, says we shouldn’t make our own baby formula, but why isn’t he ousting these companies for using questionable (at best) and health-damaging GMOs?

Investigation launched in Luxembourg over Skype’s links to NSA surveillance programs

The data protection commissioner in Luxembourg has launched an investigation into Skype’s covert involvement with surveillance programs run by the National Security Agency (NSA), according to a report Friday.

The link between the NSA and Skype is hardly secret at this point, especially given the exposure of “Project Chess,” the secret program aimed at making Skype calls easily available to intelligence agencies.

Furthermore, in early June it was revealed that Skype was one of the partners working with the NSA on their massive Prism program.

Skype, owned by Microsoft, could face both administrative and criminal sanctions, including a ban on secretly passing any user communications to US intelligence agencies, the Guardian reports.

If the investigation finds that Skype’s data sharing is found to violate Luxembourg’s data protection laws, the company, headquartered in the European country, could also be fined.

The Guardian reports that this investigation, launched by Gerard Lommel, apparently began in June after Skype’s ties to NSA surveillance were revealed.

In Luxembourg, communications can only be monitored with judicial approval or authorization of a tribunal established by the prime minister.

As the Guardian notes, “it is unclear whether Skype’s transfer of communications to the NSA have been sanctioned by Luxembourg through a secret legal assistance or data transfer agreement that would not be known to the data protection commissioner at the start of their inquiry.”

Indeed, some European countries, including Germany, have worked closely with the NSA on their surveillance program despite data protection laws.

This led to the German interior minister advising people to avoid using Google and Facebook if they’re concerned about NSA spying.

As the Guardian reported in July, after Skype was acquired by Microsoft, “the NSA boasted that a new capability had tripled the amount of Skype video calls being collected through Prism.”

“It is what many of us feared, and now we know for sure,” Grégoire Pouget, an information security expert with Reporters Without Borders, said to the Guardian.

“If you are a journalist working on issues that could interest the US government or some of their allies, you should not use Skype,” Pouget said.

When a Microsoft representative spoke to VentureBeat, they suggested that the investigation in Luxembourg may stem from complaints filed by Europe v. Facebook, which I reported on in June.

“We regularly engage in a dialogue with data protection authorities around the world and are always happy to answer their questions,” the Microsoft representative said to VentureBeat.

“It has been previously widely reported that the Luxembourg [data protection authority] was one of the [data protection authorities] that received complaints from the Europe v. Facebook group, so we’re happy to answer any questions they may have,” the representative added.

Interestingly, the Guardian reported that Microsoft would not respond for comment.

The data protection commissioner’s office in Luxembourg did not respond to either VentureBeat or the Guardian for comment.
